Definition
Let and let be a sequence of distinct complex numbers. For let , a function in the Lebesgue space . A nonharmonic Fourier series with frequencies is a series with complex coefficients , considered with convergence in .
Remarks
When and , this is an ordinary Fourier series, and the form an orthonormal basis. In general the are not orthogonal, and the theory asks which sequences make complete, a Riesz basis or a frame of . When is a Riesz basis, every has a unique expansion , and is comparable to .
Example: let and with real and . By Kadec's theorem, is a Riesz basis of , so every function in is the sum of a unique nonharmonic Fourier series with these frequencies. The constant cannot be replaced by a larger number.
Non-example: let and . The functions all have period , so they cannot represent , which is not -periodic on . So the closed span of is not all of and the system is not complete.
