Definition
Let be a normed space and let be subsets of , which in general are not linear subspaces. Usually there is a constant with . Nonlinear approximation is the approximation of elements by elements of , measured by the error of best approximation The main example is -term approximation from a dictionary , with .
Remarks
Example: let be a separable Hilbert space with orthonormal basis , and let be the vectors with at most nonzero coordinates. The set is not a subspace: but . For , the best element of keeps the coefficients of largest absolute value, so is the sum of over all other .
Non-example: the polynomials of degree at most in is a linear subspace, so approximation from it is linear approximation.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
