Difference and functional equations Definition
Nonlinear difference equation
Builds on Recurrence relation
Definition
Let be a field and let . Let be a function, and consider the recurrence relation It is linear if there are functions with for all and all . It is a nonlinear difference equation if it is not linear.
Remarks
Example: the logistic map recurrence over with is nonlinear. Indeed, for fixed an affine function has constant second difference zero, while gives . Non-example: the Fibonacci recurrence is linear, with and . The same definitions apply with replaced by and by a map to , which gives nonlinear systems. An autonomous first-order equation is the iteration of the map , so its study belongs to discrete dynamical systems.
