Definition
Let , let , let and be continuous. A nonlinear Volterra equation of the second kind for an unknown continuous function is A nonlinear Volterra equation of the first kind is . A solution on a subinterval with is a continuous function on that satisfies the equation there.
Remarks
If , this is the linear Volterra integral equation of the second kind. If satisfies a Lipschitz condition on all of , the equation has exactly one continuous solution on , and the successive approximations converge to it. If the Lipschitz condition holds only for in bounded sets, there is still a unique solution on some interval with .
Example: on , with . The function solves it, since . It is the integral form of , , and the solution does not extend past .
Non-example: has the fixed upper limit ; it is a Urysohn equation, not a Volterra one.
