Definition
Let be continuous and Lipschitz continuous in its second argument. Then the initial value problem , has a unique solution on . For an integer let and for . A -step method is a rule that starts from given values . For it determines from , , the values and finitely many evaluations of . It may do so by solving an equation that contains . It is one-step if , explicit if is given by a formula in the earlier values, and implicit otherwise. The method is convergent if, for every such and starting values with for as , It is convergent of order if this maximum is for every sufficiently smooth and starting values with error .
Remarks
Example: the Euler method is an explicit one-step method, convergent of order when is Lipschitz in . Example: the two-step Adams–Bashforth method is explicit with . Non-example of convergence: the explicit two-step rule has local truncation error but is not convergent, because the root of makes perturbations grow like . Many methods use variable steps ; then is replaced by .
