Octahedral axiom
Builds on Additive categoryAdditive functor
Definition
Let be an additive category with an additive automorphism . Let a class of distinguished triangles be given that satisfies the axioms TR1, TR2 and TR3 of a triangulated category. The class satisfies the octahedral axiom (TR4) if the following holds. Let and be morphisms, and let be distinguished triangles. Then there are morphisms and such that
- is a distinguished triangle;
- and ;
- and .
Remarks
Here , and are cones of , and . Example: take , so that with the triangle , and take the second and third triangles equal. Then and work: is distinguished, being a rotation of ; because is a composite of consecutive maps of a distinguished triangle; and , , . In the homotopy category of chain complexes the axiom holds, with and the maps and built from mapping cones. The axiom is a form of the isomorphism for : read as , as and as .
