Definition

Let UU and XX be schemes. A morphism of schemes (f,f#) ⁣:U→X(f, f^\#) \colon U \to X is an open immersion if:

  1. ff is a homeomorphism of UU onto an open subset VV of XX;
  2. the induced map 𝒪X∣V→f∗𝒪U\mathcal{O}_X|_V \to f_* \mathcal{O}_U is an isomorphism of sheaves of rings on VV.

Equivalently, ff is an isomorphism of UU onto the open subscheme (V,𝒪X∣V)(V, \mathcal{O}_X|_V).

Remarks

Example: for a ring AA and g∈Ag \in A, the morphism Spec⁡Ag→Spec⁡A\operatorname{Spec} A_g \to \operatorname{Spec} A induced by A→AgA \to A_g is an open immersion onto D(g)D(g). On each basic open D(gh)⊆D(g)D(gh) \subseteq D(g) the sheaf map is the isomorphism Agh≅(Ag)hA_{gh} \cong (A_g)_h. Non-example: for a field kk, let f ⁣:Spec⁡k→Spec⁡k[x]/(x2)f \colon \operatorname{Spec} k \to \operatorname{Spec} k[x]/(x^2) come from k[x]/(x2)→kk[x]/(x^2) \to k, x↦0x \mapsto 0. Both spaces are one point, so ff is a homeomorphism onto an open set and clause 1 holds. Clause 2 fails: the ring map k[x]/(x2)→kk[x]/(x^2) \to k is not injective, so it is not an isomorphism.
