Open segment

Builds on Vector spaceLine segment

Definition

Let VV be a real vector space and let x,y∈Vx, y \in V. The open segment between xx and yy is the set (x,y)={(1−t)x+ty:t∈ℝ, 0<t<1}.(x, y) = \set{(1 - t) x + t y : t \in \R,\ 0 < t < 1}.

Remarks

Example: on the real line, (0,1)(0, 1) in this sense is the open interval of numbers strictly between 00 and 11; the point 1/41/4 is in it with t=1/4t = 1/4.

Non-example: the endpoint xx of a line segment [x,y][x, y] with x≠yx \ne y is not in (x,y)(x, y), since (1−t)x+ty=x(1 - t) x + t y = x forces t(y−x)=0t (y - x) = 0, so t=0t = 0, which is not allowed.

If x≠yx \ne y, then (x,y)=[x,y]∖{x,y}(x, y) = [x, y] \setminus \set{x, y}. If x=yx = y, then (x,y)={x}(x, y) = \set{x}, so the open segment is not empty.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
