Opposite category
Definition
Let be a category. The opposite category is the category defined as follows:
- its objects are the objects of ;
- for objects , , its morphisms are ; a morphism of is written when seen in ;
- the composite is , and the identity of is .
Remarks
The category axioms for follow from those of read backwards, and . Example: let be a preorder, seen as a category with one morphism when . Its opposite has one morphism when , so it is the preorder . Non-example: the rule "keep the arrows as they are and only reverse the order of composition" does not give a category in general. For and , the expression has no meaning in unless . A morphism is a monomorphism in exactly when is an epimorphism in .
