Definition
Let be a compact set, the design region, and let be continuous. Consider the linear model with unknown and uncorrelated errors of mean and common variance . An approximate design is a probability measure on with finite support, and its information matrix is A design is:
- D-optimal if it maximises over all approximate designs;
- A-optimal if is invertible and it minimises over the designs with invertible;
- E-optimal if it maximises the smallest eigenvalue of ;
- G-optimal if it minimises over the designs with invertible.
Remarks
For an exact design with runs at and design matrix with rows , one has . If is invertible, the least squares estimator has covariance matrix . So a D-optimal design minimises the volume of the confidence ellipsoid for under normal errors.
Example: and , a straight line. With moments and , one gets , the variance of under . On this variance is at most , with equality exactly for the design with mass at and at , which is therefore D-optimal.
Non-example: the design with all mass at has , which is singular, so and the slope cannot be estimated; it fails clause 1.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
