Definition
Let be a Noetherian integral domain with field of fractions , and let be a finite-dimensional associative algebra over . An -order in is a subring of , with the same identity, such that:
- is a finitely generated -module.
- contains a -basis of , that is .
Remarks
Example: in , with . It is a subring containing , it is generated as a -module by and , and is a -basis of . Other examples are in and the group ring of a finite group in . Non-example: is a subring of that spans , but it is not a finitely generated -module, so clause 1 fails. Non-example: inside is finitely generated but fails clause 2, since . When is a principal ideal domain, clause 1 makes a free -module, and clause 2 then says its rank is . Every element of an order is integral over .
