Orthomodular lattice
Builds on Orthocomplemented lattice
Definition
Let be an orthocomplemented lattice with orthocomplementation . The lattice is orthomodular if for all ,
Remarks
An equivalent form is: if and , then .
Example: the lattice of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space . If are closed subspaces, every is , where is the orthogonal projection onto ; then . So is the closed span of and . When is infinite-dimensional, this lattice is orthomodular but not modular.
Non-example: the hexagon ortholattice with elements and order generated by and . The map exchanging with , with and with is an orthocomplementation. Here , but , so .
Every Boolean algebra is orthomodular, and every modular ortholattice is orthomodular.
