Definition
Let be a prime. Let be a field that is complete for a non-Archimedean absolute value extending the -adic absolute value of . Examples are , its finite extensions, and . A -adic dynamical system is a pair in which:
- is either the projective line or a subset of , such as a closed disc;
- is given by a rational function in when , or by a power series with coefficients in that converges on otherwise.
-adic dynamics is the study of the iterates and of the orbits of such systems, with respect to the topology of .
Remarks
Example: let and . It maps into , and it is a polynomial, so is a -adic dynamical system. It is an isometry, since . The orbit of is , which is dense in .
Non-example: let on . Then has absolute value , so does not map into , and clause 2 fails.
A second example: on the open unit disc . Since , every orbit tends to the attracting fixed point .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
