p-adic gamma function
Builds on p-adic integerFactorial
Definition
Let be a prime number and let be the ring of p-adic integers. For a positive integer , put The -adic gamma function is the unique continuous function that takes these values at the positive integers.
Remarks
The positive integers are dense in , so such a continuous extension is unique. It exists because and are -adically close when and are; the proof uses a generalisation of Wilson's theorem. The values of are units of .
Example: for , , , , and . Each value follows from the previous one by the rule which holds for all ; here .
Non-example: the factorial has no continuous extension to . Indeed in as , but is divisible by and so tends to , while .
