Definition
Let be a complex number. Weber's equation with parameter is the linear differential equation Let be Kummer's function and the gamma function, with read as at the poles of . The parabolic cylinder function is the entire function
Remarks
The function solves Weber's equation, and it is the solution with as . The functions and are solutions too, and they are linearly independent unless is a nonnegative integer. Another common notation is . Example: for , the first coefficient is and the second is , since ; so . Check: gives , so . More generally, for , one has with the Hermite polynomials. Non-example: solves Weber's equation for , since , but it is not : it grows as instead of decaying.
