Definition

Let MM be a compact smooth manifold without boundary with a smooth positive density μ\mu. Let EE and FF be smooth vector bundles over MM. For a smooth vector bundle VV over MM, let Hom⁡(V,V)\Hom(V, V) also denote the bundle over M×MM \times M with fibre Hom⁡(Vy,Vx)\Hom(V_y, V_x) at (x,y)(x, y). A linear operator R ⁣:Γ(V)→Γ(V)R \colon \Gamma(V) \to \Gamma(V) is smoothing if there is a smooth section KK of this bundle such that (Ru)(x)=∫MK(x,y) u(y) dμ(y)for all u∈Γ(V).(R u)(x) = \int_M K(x, y) \, u(y) \, d\mu(y) \quad \text{for all } u \in \Gamma(V). Let P ⁣:Γ(E)→Γ(F)P \colon \Gamma(E) \to \Gamma(F) be a differential operator. A parametrix for PP is a continuous linear operator Q ⁣:Γ(F)→Γ(E)Q \colon \Gamma(F) \to \Gamma(E) such that QP−id⁡QP - \id and PQ−id⁡PQ - \id are smoothing.

Remarks

An operator QQ with only QP−id⁡QP - \id smoothing is a left parametrix, and one with only PQ−id⁡PQ - \id smoothing is a right parametrix. Two parametrices of the same operator differ by a smoothing operator. For constant-coefficient operators on ℝn\R^n, a parametrix corresponds to a distribution ee with Pe=δ+ωP e = \delta + \omega for a smooth function ω\omega, an approximate fundamental solution. An elliptic operator of order mm has a parametrix that is a pseudo-differential operator of order −m-m.

Example: on the circle S1=ℝ/2πℤS^1 = \R / 2\pi\Z with dμ=dxd\mu = dx, let P=−d2/dx2P = -d^2/dx^2 on functions, and define Q(∑n∈ℤcneinx)=∑n≠0cnn2 einx.Q\Bigl(\sum_{n \in \Z} c_n e^{inx}\Bigr) = \sum_{n \ne 0} \frac{c_n}{n^2} \, e^{inx}. Then PQu=QPu=u−c0PQu = QPu = u - c_0, where c0=12π∫02πu(y) dyc_0 = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} u(y) \, dy. So QP−id⁡QP - \id and PQ−id⁡PQ - \id are both the operator with the constant smooth kernel K(x,y)=−12πK(x, y) = -\frac{1}{2\pi}, and QQ is a parametrix.

Non-example: the zero operator is not a parametrix for P=−d2/dx2P = -d^2/dx^2. Here PQ−id⁡=−id⁡PQ - \id = -\id, and the identity is not smoothing. An operator with a continuous kernel extends to a compact operator on L2(S1)L^2(S^1), while the identity of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space is not compact.
