Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, and let χ\chi, ψ\psi and Δj\Delta_j, j∈ℤj \in \Z, be as in the Littlewood–Paley decomposition on ℝn\R^n. For m∈ℤm \in \Z and a bounded function gg, let SmgS_m g be defined by Smg^(ξ)=χ(2−mξ)g^(ξ)\widehat{S_m g}(\xi) = \chi(2^{-m}\xi) \hat g(\xi), where  ^\hat{\ } is the Fourier transform of tempered distributions. For ff in the Lp space L2(ℝn)L^2(\R^n) and g∈L∞(ℝn)g \in L^\infty(\R^n), the paraproduct of ff by gg is Πgf=∑j∈ℤ(Sj−3g) (Δjf),\Pi_g f = \sum_{j \in \Z} (S_{j-3} g) \, (\Delta_j f), where the series converges in L2(ℝn)L^2(\R^n).

Remarks

The function SmgS_m g is the convolution of gg with 2mnχˇ(2m⋅)2^{mn} \check\chi(2^m \cdot), a smooth average of gg at scale 2−m2^{-m}, so ∣Smg∣≤C∥g∥∞\abs{S_m g} \le C \norm{g}_\infty. The Fourier transform of the jj-th term is supported in {2j−2≤∣ξ∣≤2j+2}\set{2^{j-2} \le \abs{\xi} \le 2^{j+2}}, because Δjf\Delta_j f has frequencies between 2j−12^{j-1} and 2j+12^{j+1} and Sj−3gS_{j-3} g has frequencies below 2j−22^{j-2}. So the terms are almost orthogonal, which gives the convergence and the bound ∥Πgf∥2≤C∥g∥∞∥f∥2\norm{\Pi_g f}_2 \le C \norm{g}_\infty \norm{f}_2. The shift 33 is a convention; other authors use a different shift or a different cut-off.

Grouping the terms of fg=∑j,kΔjf Δkgfg = \sum_{j, k} \Delta_j f \, \Delta_k g according to k≤j−3k \le j - 3, j≤k−3j \le k - 3 or ∣j−k∣≤2\abs{j - k} \le 2 gives Bony's decomposition fg=Πgf+Πfg+∑∣j−k∣≤2Δjf Δkgfg = \Pi_g f + \Pi_f g + \sum_{\abs{j - k} \le 2} \Delta_j f \, \Delta_k g for ff and gg both in L2(ℝn)∩L∞(ℝn)L^2(\R^n) \cap L^\infty(\R^n), since ∑k≤mΔkg=Smg\sum_{k \le m} \Delta_k g = S_m g.

Example: if g=cg = c is a constant, then g^\hat g is a multiple of the point mass at 00 and χ(0)=1\chi(0) = 1, so Smg=cS_m g = c for every mm. Hence Πgf=c∑jΔjf=cf\Pi_g f = c \sum_j \Delta_j f = c f.

Non-example: the term Δjf Δjg\Delta_j f \, \Delta_j g, a product of two pieces at the same frequency, is not part of a paraproduct. Its Fourier transform can be supported near 00, for instance when Δjg^\widehat{\Delta_j g} is the reflection of Δjf^\widehat{\Delta_j f}, so high frequencies combine into low ones; such terms go into the remainder.
