Partial algebra

Definition
Let be a signature, that is, a set of function symbols, each with an arity . A partial -algebra is a set with the following data for each symbol of arity . It has a subset of the Cartesian power and a map . The map is a partial operation on , and is defined exactly when .
Remarks
When for every , the partial algebra is an ordinary (total) algebra.
Example: the natural numbers with subtraction, where is defined exactly when . The domain is , and on it , so subtraction is a partial operation on . It is not total, since is not in its domain.
Non-example: subtraction on all of with values in is not a partial operation on , since its value does not lie in the carrier .
A field with the partial operation defined on is a partial algebra for the signature . Homomorphisms, subalgebras and congruences admit several inequivalent versions for partial algebras, for example weak and strong homomorphisms, so the version in use must be stated.
