Partially well-ordered set

Builds on Partial orderSequenceWell-quasi-ordering

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set. The set PP is partially well-ordered when for every infinite sequence x1,x2,x3,…x_1, x_2, x_3, \ldots in PP there are indices i<ji < j with xi≤xjx_i \le x_j. More generally, let SS be a subset of a preordered set (X,≤)(X, \le). The subset SS is partially well-ordered when every infinite sequence in SS has indices i<ji < j with xi≤xjx_i \le x_j.

Remarks

So a partially well-ordered set is a partial order that is a well-quasi-ordering.

Example: ℕ2\N^2 with the product order. Check: from any sequence (an,bn)(a_n, b_n) extract a subsequence on which ana_n is non-decreasing, then a further subsequence on which bnb_n is non-decreasing; two terms of it give i<ji < j with xi≤xjx_i \le x_j.

Non-example: ℕ\N with the trivial order, where x≤yx \le y only when x=yx = y, is a partial order but not partially well-ordered: the sequence 0,1,2,…0, 1, 2, \ldots has no i<ji < j with xi≤xjx_i \le x_j.

Every well-ordered set is partially well-ordered. In Mathlib the subset form is Set.IsPWO.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
