Path space of a manifold

Builds on Smooth manifoldRiemannian manifoldSobolev spaceGeodesicLoop space

Description

Let MM be a smooth manifold of dimension nn and fix points p,q∈Mp, q \in M. The path space Ωp,qM\Omega_{p,q} M is the set of paths γ ⁣:[0,1]→M\gamma \colon [0, 1] \to M of Sobolev class H1H^1 with γ(0)=p\gamma(0) = p and γ(1)=q\gamma(1) = q. Here H1H^1 means that in local coordinates the path is absolutely continuous with square-integrable derivative.

Remarks

The path space is a Hilbert manifold. Choose a complete Riemannian metric on MM. For a smooth path γ\gamma from pp to qq, let TγT_\gamma be the Hilbert space of H1H^1 vector fields ξ\xi along γ\gamma with ξ(0)=ξ(1)=0\xi(0) = \xi(1) = 0. Small ξ∈Tγ\xi \in T_\gamma give paths t↦exp⁡γ(t)(ξ(t))t \mapsto \exp_{\gamma(t)}(\xi(t)) from pp to qq, and these maps are charts with smooth chart changes. Every H1H^1 path is close to a smooth one, so these charts cover Ωp,qM\Omega_{p,q} M, and each model space TγT_\gamma is isomorphic to H01([0,1];ℝn)H^1_0([0, 1]; \R^n).

On this Hilbert manifold the energy E(γ)=12∫01∣γ′(t)∣2 dtE(\gamma) = \frac{1}{2} \int_0^1 \abs{\gamma'(t)}^2 \, dt is a smooth function whose critical points are the geodesics from pp to qq. The inclusion of piecewise smooth or smooth paths into Ωp,qM\Omega_{p,q} M is a homotopy equivalence. For connected MM the space is homotopy equivalent to the based loop space of MM.
