Penny graph
Builds on Graph
Definition
A finite graph is a penny graph if there is a map such that:
- for all distinct ;
- if and only if .
Equivalently, is the contact graph of a family of closed discs of diameter with pairwise disjoint interiors, centred at the points .
Remarks
Example: the triangle is a penny graph. Put at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side ; all distances are equal to , so both clauses hold.
Non-example: is not a penny graph. Three of its vertices would have to sit at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side . No point of the plane is at distance from all three corners, so clause 2 fails for the fourth vertex.
Every penny graph is planar and has maximum degree at most . Take a vertex whose point is a corner of the convex hull of . Its neighbours are at angles at least apart inside an angle less than , so it has degree at most . Hence every penny graph can be properly coloured with colours, by colouring greedily after removing such vertices one at a time.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
