Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and J=J(R)J = J(R) its Jacobson radical. A subset S⊆RS \subseteq R is left T-nilpotent if for every sequence a1,a2,a3,…a_1, a_2, a_3, \ldots of elements of SS there is n≥1n \ge 1 with a1a2⋯an=0a_1 a_2 \cdots a_n = 0. RR is left perfect if the following hold.

  1. RR is semilocal, that is, R/JR/J is a semisimple ring.
  2. JJ is left T-nilpotent.

Right perfect rings are defined with right T-nilpotent, which asks for an⋯a2a1=0a_n \cdots a_2 a_1 = 0 instead.

Remarks

Example: a left Artinian ring is left and right perfect: R/JR/J is semisimple, and Jn=0J^n = 0 for some nn, so every product of nn elements of JJ is 00. Non-example: ℤ(p)\Z_{(p)} is semilocal, but J=pℤ(p)J = p\Z_{(p)} is not left T-nilpotent, since the constant sequence p,p,p,…p, p, p, \ldots has all products pn≠0p^n \ne 0. By Bass's theorem P, RR is left perfect if and only if every left RR-module has a projective cover. This is also equivalent to the descending chain condition on principal right ideals. Many authors take one of these equivalent conditions as the definition.
