Definition
Let be an open interval and let , , be a family of maps of a set with smooth. A period-doubling cascade of the family is a strictly increasing sequence of parameters in with a limit , such that for each :
- for slightly less than , the family has an attracting periodic solution of prime period ;
- at this cycle undergoes a period-doubling bifurcation: it loses stability, and an attracting cycle of prime period is born from it.
Remarks
Example: the logistic family on has such a cascade with and . At the fixed point has multiplier , and a -cycle appears. The limit is .
Non-example: the family on has no period-doubling cascade. Its only possible attracting cycle is the fixed point for , and it never has an attracting cycle of period , so clause 2 fails already for .
For typical smooth unimodal families with a quadratic maximum, such as the logistic family, the ratios tend to the Feigenbaum constant .
