Periodic sequence

Builds on Sequence

Definition

Let SS be a set and let (xn)n≥0(x_n)_{n \ge 0} be a sequence of elements of SS. The sequence is periodic if there is an integer p≥1p \ge 1 such that xn+p=xnfor all n≥0.x_{n+p} = x_n \quad \text{for all } n \ge 0. Such a pp is a period of the sequence, and the smallest such pp is its least period.

Remarks

Example: xn=(−1)nx_n = (-1)^n in ℝ\R satisfies xn+2=(−1)n(−1)2=xnx_{n+2} = (-1)^n (-1)^2 = x_n for all nn, so it is periodic, with least period 22 since x1≠x0x_1 \ne x_0.

Non-example: xn=nx_n = n is not periodic, since xn+p=n+p≠xnx_{n+p} = n + p \ne x_n for every p≥1p \ge 1.

The sequence is eventually periodic if the condition holds for all n≥n0n \ge n_0 for some n0n_0; for example 0,1,1,1,…0, 1, 1, 1, \dots is eventually periodic but not periodic. Every period is a multiple of the least period. The same definition applies to two-sided sequences (xn)n∈ℤ(x_n)_{n \in \Z}, with the condition required for all n∈ℤn \in \Z.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
