Difference and functional equations Definition
Periodic solution of a difference equation
Builds on Periodic sequencePeriodic point
Definition
Let , let be a set, and let be a map. Consider the autonomous difference equation of order Let be an integer. A solution is periodic with period if it is a periodic sequence with period , that is, for all . Its prime period is its least period.
Remarks
Example: for on with and , the solution is , so every solution is periodic with period .
Non-example: for on with , the solution is strictly increasing, so for all and it is not periodic.
For and , the solution starting at is periodic with period if and only if , that is, is a periodic point of . A periodic solution of period is an equilibrium. For a non-autonomous equation, one asks for periodic solutions when the equation itself is periodic in .
