Definition

Let pp be a nonzero real number. The periodicity equation with period pp is the functional equation f(x+p)=f(x)for all x∈ℝ,f(x + p) = f(x) \quad \text{for all } x \in \R, for an unknown function f ⁣:ℝ→Yf \colon \R \to Y, where YY is a set. The solutions are the periodic functions with period pp.

Remarks

Example: f(x)=cos⁡(πx)f(x) = \cos(\pi x) is a solution for p=2p = 2, since cos⁡(πx+2π)=cos⁡(πx)\cos(\pi x + 2\pi) = \cos(\pi x). Non-example: f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 is not a solution for any p≠0p \ne 0, since f(0+p)=p2≠0=f(0)f(0 + p) = p^2 \ne 0 = f(0). With q=∣p∣q = \abs{p}, the general solution is f(x)=h(x−q⌊x/q⌋)f(x) = h\big(x - q \floor{x/q}\big), where h ⁣:[0,q)→Yh \colon [0, q) \to Y is arbitrary. Every solution for pp is also a solution for each nonzero integer multiple npnp. The analogous equation f(x+p)=−f(x)f(x + p) = -f(x) is called the antiperiodicity equation; its solutions have period 2p2p.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
