Convex and discrete geometry Polytopes and polyhedra Example
Permutohedron
Builds on Convex polytopeVertex of a polytopeFacetPermutation
Example
Let . The permutohedron is the convex hull in of the points where runs over all permutations of .
All these points satisfy , so lies in a hyperplane, and it has dimension . Each of the points is a vertex: the vector is maximised over the points uniquely at that point, by the rearrangement inequality. The facets correspond to the nonempty proper subsets , with facet inequality so there are facets. Two vertices are joined by an edge exactly when one is obtained from the other by swapping the values and for some . Hence every vertex lies in edges and is a simple polytope.
is a zonotope: it is a translate of the Minkowski sum of the segments for .
Remarks
For , is a regular hexagon with vertices the six permutations of . For , is the truncated octahedron, with vertices, facets ( squares and hexagons) and edges.
