Perspectivity

Builds on Projective plane

Definition

Let ℓ\ell and mm be two distinct lines of a projective plane, and let OO be a point that lies on neither of them. The perspectivity from ℓ\ell to mm with centre OO sends each point XX of ℓ\ell to the common point of the lines OXOX and mm.

Remarks

The map is a bijection from the points of ℓ\ell to the points of mm; its inverse is the perspectivity from mm to ℓ\ell with the same centre. It fixes the common point of ℓ\ell and mm. A composition of finitely many perspectivities is a projectivity. Dually, let AA and BB be points and aa a line through neither. The perspectivity with axis aa sends each line xx through AA to the line through BB and the point x∩ax \cap a.

Example: in the real affine plane, completed to ℙ2(ℝ)\mathbb{P}^2(\R), let ℓ\ell be y=1y = 1, let mm be y=2y = 2, and let O=(0,0)O = (0, 0). The perspectivity sends (t,1)(t, 1) to (2t,2)(2t, 2). Check: the line through OO and (t,1)(t, 1) is {(st,s)}\set{(st, s)}, and it meets y=2y = 2 at s=2s = 2. The common point of ℓ\ell and mm is their point at infinity, which is fixed.

Non-example: if the centre OO lies on ℓ\ell, the rule fails at X=OX = O, since there is no line OXOX for X=OX = O.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
