Pexider equation

Builds on Functional equationFunction

Definition

The Pexider equation is the functional equation f(x+y)=g(x)+h(y)for all x,y∈ℝ,f(x + y) = g(x) + h(y) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in \R, for three unknown functions f,g,h ⁣:ℝ→ℝf, g, h \colon \R \to \R. A solution is a triple (f,g,h)(f, g, h) that satisfies this identity for all real xx and yy.

Remarks

Example: f(x)=5x+3f(x) = 5x + 3, g(x)=5x+1g(x) = 5x + 1, h(x)=5x+2h(x) = 5x + 2 is a solution, since both sides equal 5x+5y+35x + 5y + 3. Non-example: f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2, g(x)=x2g(x) = x^2, h(x)=x2h(x) = x^2 is not a solution, since f(1+1)=4f(1 + 1) = 4 while g(1)+h(1)=2g(1) + h(1) = 2. Setting y=0y = 0 and then x=0x = 0 gives g(x)=f(x)−h(0)g(x) = f(x) - h(0) and h(y)=f(y)−g(0)h(y) = f(y) - g(0). Then A(x)=f(x)−g(0)−h(0)A(x) = f(x) - g(0) - h(0) is an additive function, which gives the general solution f=A+a+bf = A + a + b, g=A+ag = A + a, h=A+bh = A + b with a=g(0)a = g(0) and b=h(0)b = h(0). The same method solves the equation for maps from a group to an abelian group.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
