Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension . A Pfaffian system on is an exterior differential system generated, as a differential ideal, by one-forms . So is the algebraic ideal generated by and . One usually asks that are linearly independent at each point. Then is a distribution of rank , and an immersed submanifold is an integral manifold of exactly when it is tangent to .
Remarks
The system is completely integrable if for , that is, if each lies in the algebraic ideal generated by the . By the Frobenius theorem, this holds exactly when every point lies on an integral manifold of dimension .
Example: on , the system generated by has , so it is completely integrable. Its integral surfaces are the planes .
Example: on , let . Then and , so the system is not completely integrable. It has integral curves, such as , but no integral surfaces.
Non-example: the exterior differential system on generated by the two-form is not a Pfaffian system. It contains no nonzero one-form, so it is not generated by one-forms.
