Definition

Let KK be a field and let K[x]K[x] be the polynomial ring in one variable over KK. Let T ⁣:K[x]→K[x]T \colon K[x] \to K[x] be a KK-linear map. The Pincherle derivative of TT is the linear map T′T' on K[x]K[x] given by T′(f)=T(xf)−x T(f)(f∈K[x]).T'(f) = T(x f) - x \, T(f) \qquad (f \in K[x]). Writing xx also for the operator of multiplication by xx, this says T′=Tx−xTT' = T x - x T.

Remarks

The map T↦T′T \mapsto T' is linear and satisfies the product rule (ST)′=S′T+ST′(ST)' = S'T + ST', since STx−xST=S(Tx−xT)+(Sx−xS)TSTx - xST = S(Tx - xT) + (Sx - xS)T.

Example: for D=d/dxD = d/dx, D′(f)=(xf)′−xf′=fD'(f) = (xf)' - x f' = f, so D′=id⁡D' = \id. For the shift Ehf(x)=f(x+h)E^h f(x) = f(x + h) with h∈Kh \in K, (Eh)′(f)(x)=(x+h)f(x+h)−xf(x+h)=hf(x+h)(E^h)'(f)(x) = (x + h) f(x + h) - x f(x + h) = h f(x + h), so (Eh)′=hEh(E^h)' = h E^h.

Operators with Pincherle derivative zero: a multiplication operator Mqf=qfM_q f = q f with q∈K[x]q \in K[x] commutes with xx, so Mq′=0M_q' = 0. Conversely, T′=0T' = 0 forces T(xn)=xnT(1)T(x^n) = x^n T(1) for all nn, so T=MT(1)T = M_{T(1)}.
