Definition
Let be a field. A projective plane curve over is the closed subscheme of the projective plane defined by a nonconstant homogeneous polynomial . Its degree is . An affine plane curve is the closed subscheme defined by a nonconstant polynomial in the polynomial ring .
Remarks
The polynomial is determined by up to a nonzero scalar factor. A plane curve is an algebraic curve: it has dimension . It is reduced exactly when has no repeated irreducible factor, and integral exactly when is irreducible. Example: defines a conic of degree in , the projective closure of the circle . Non-example: the twisted cubic is a curve in that lies in no plane of , so it is not a plane curve inside . As an abstract curve it is isomorphic to , which is a line in ; being a plane curve is a property of the embedding. A nonzero linear form vanishing on it would give a linear relation among , and there is none.
