Definition
Let be a complex manifold, for example a domain in . A plurisubharmonic exhaustion function on is a function such that:
- is plurisubharmonic on .
- is an exhaustion: for every , the set is relatively compact in , that is, its closure in is compact.
It is smooth and strictly plurisubharmonic if moreover is and its Levi form is positive definite at every point, in local holomorphic coordinates.
Remarks
Example: on , is a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion function. Its Levi form is , and its sublevel sets are open balls. Non-example: on the unit ball , is still strictly plurisubharmonic but is not an exhaustion, since is not relatively compact in . On , the function is a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion function. For a domain , an equivalent form of clause 2 for continuous is that as tends to or, when is unbounded, as .
