Pointed cone
Builds on Vector spaceConvex cone
Definition
Let be a real vector space. A pointed cone in is a convex cone with .
Remarks
Equivalently, is nonempty and for all and all real . In this form a pointed cone is a submodule of over the semiring of nonnegative reals.
Example: the closed upper half-plane . It is closed under sums and positive multiples, and it contains . It contains the whole -axis, so it is pointed in this sense but not salient.
Non-example: the open quadrant is a convex cone, but it does not contain .
Warning on terminology: many texts on convex analysis say pointed for a convex cone with , that is, a cone that contains no line. That property is called salient here.
