Polygon triangulation
Builds on TriangleLine segment
Definition
Let be a simple polygon, that is, a closed region bounded by a closed polygonal chain with vertices that does not cross itself. A triangulation of is a finite set of triangles such that:
- the union of the triangles of is ;
- the vertices of each triangle of are vertices of ;
- any two distinct triangles of meet in the empty set, in one common vertex, or in one common side.
Equivalently, a triangulation is given by a maximal set of diagonals of that pairwise meet only at endpoints. A diagonal is a line segment joining two vertices of that lies in and meets the boundary of only at its endpoints.
Remarks
Example: let be the square with vertices , , , . The diagonal from to splits it into two triangles. Their union is , their vertices are vertices of , and they meet in a common side, so all three clauses hold.
Non-example: split the same square into four triangles by joining the centre to the four corners. Clauses 1 and 3 hold, but clause 2 fails, since the centre is not a vertex of .
Every simple polygon with vertices has a triangulation, and every triangulation has triangles and diagonals. A convex polygon with vertices has exactly triangulations, where is the -th Catalan number.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
