Several complex variables and analytic spaces Definition
Polynomially convex set
Definition
Let be a compact set. Its polynomially convex hull is where the polynomials are the polynomials in several variables with complex coefficients. The set is polynomially convex if .
Remarks
Always , and is compact. It coincides with the holomorphically convex hull of in , because entire functions are uniform limits of their Taylor polynomials on compact sets.
Example: a compact convex set is polynomially convex. If , there is a complex linear function with . Then satisfies , and the Taylor polynomials of converge to uniformly on , so some polynomial has .
Non-example: the unit circle in . By the maximum principle, for every polynomial , so but .
For , a compact set is polynomially convex exactly when is connected.
