Ordinary differential equations Concept
Power series solution
Summary
The power series method looks for a solution of a differential equation in the form . Consider , where and are analytic at : they equal convergent power series near . One puts the series into the equation and compares the coefficients of each power . This gives a recurrence for the , with and free. The resulting series converge at least on each disc around where the series of and converge, and they give two independent solutions.
Remarks
Example: for , the series gives , so and . Example: for , the recurrence is . It gives the series of and . At a point where a leading coefficient vanishes, the Frobenius method, a variant with a factor , is used.
