Definition
Let be an invertible real matrix, and consider the linear system . A preconditioner for is an invertible matrix , used through the map . The left preconditioned system is . The right preconditioned system is with . If , the split preconditioned system is with .
Remarks
All three systems have the same solution as . The definition is formal; a preconditioner is useful when two informal requirements hold. First, is cheap to compute for any . Second, is close to the identity, for example it has a small condition number or few clusters of eigenvalues. The two extremes are , which is cheap but changes nothing, and , which is ideal but as costly as the original problem. Example: the Jacobi preconditioner is invertible when all diagonal entries are nonzero. For with rows and , the ratio of the extreme eigenvalues of is about . The matrix has rows and and eigenvalues and , with ratio about . Non-example: the matrix with rows and is singular, so it is not a preconditioner. For a symmetric positive definite one takes symmetric positive definite, so that methods for symmetric systems still apply.
