Definition

Let 𝒱\mathcal{V} be a variety, let XX be a set, and let F=F𝒱(X)F = F_{\mathcal{V}}(X) be the free algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V} on XX. Let RR be a set of pairs (s,t)(s, t) of elements of FF, called relations and written s=ts = t. Let ΞΈR\theta_R be the congruence generated by RR on FF. The algebra presented by XX and RR in 𝒱\mathcal{V} is the quotient algebra ⟨X∣RβŸ©π’±=F/ΞΈR.\langle X \mid R \rangle_{\mathcal{V}} = F / \theta_R. A presentation of an algebra Aβˆˆπ’±A \in \mathcal{V} is a pair (X,R)(X, R) with an isomorphism ⟨X∣RβŸ©π’±β†’A\langle X \mid R \rangle_{\mathcal{V}} \to A. The algebra AA is finitely presented in 𝒱\mathcal{V} if it has a presentation with XX and RR finite.

Remarks

The presented algebra has this universal property. Let Bβˆˆπ’±B \in \mathcal{V} and let f ⁣:Xβ†’Bf \colon X \to B be a map under which each relation s=ts = t holds in BB. Then there is exactly one homomorphism ⟨X∣RβŸ©π’±β†’B\langle X \mid R \rangle_{\mathcal{V}} \to B that extends ff. Every Aβˆˆπ’±A \in \mathcal{V} has a presentation: take X=AX = A and RR the kernel of the homomorphism F𝒱(A)β†’AF_{\mathcal{V}}(A) \to A that extends the identity map. Example: in the variety of commutative monoids, ⟨a∣a2=a3⟩\langle a \mid a^2 = a^3 \rangle is the monoid {1,a,a2}\set{1, a, a^2} with a3=a2a^3 = a^2. The relation holds there, and the universal property is checked by sending aa to any element bb with b2=b3b^2 = b^3. Non-example: the same pair ({a},{a2=a3})(\set{a}, \set{a^2 = a^3}) does not present β„€/2β„€\Z / 2\Z as a commutative monoid, since in β„€/2β„€={1,a}\Z / 2\Z = \set{1, a} one has a2=1a^2 = 1 and a3=aa^3 = a, so the relation a2=a3a^2 = a^3 fails. The presented algebra depends on the variety: ⟨a,b∣ ⟩\langle a, b \mid \ \rangle is β„•2\N^2 in commutative monoids and the free monoid on two letters in monoids.
