Product of rings

Builds on Ring

Definition

Let II be a set and let (Ri)i∈I(R_i)_{i \in I} be a family of rings. The product ∏i∈IRi\prod_{i \in I} R_i is the set of families (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} with ai∈Ria_i \in R_i for each i∈Ii \in I. Its addition is (ai)i∈I+(bi)i∈I=(ai+bi)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} + (b_i)_{i \in I} = (a_i + b_i)_{i \in I}. Its multiplication is (ai)i∈I⋅(bi)i∈I=(ai⋅bi)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} \cdot (b_i)_{i \in I} = (a_i \cdot b_i)_{i \in I}. With these operations, ∏i∈IRi\prod_{i \in I} R_i is a ring, with zero (0)i∈I(0)_{i \in I} and identity (1)i∈I(1)_{i \in I}.

Remarks

For two rings RR and SS, the product is R×S={(r,s):r∈R,s∈S}R \times S = \{(r, s) : r \in R, s \in S\}. For each j∈Ij \in I, the projection ∏i∈IRi→Rj\prod_{i \in I} R_i \to R_j, (ai)i∈I↦aj(a_i)_{i \in I} \mapsto a_j, is a ring homomorphism. The product of two nonzero rings is not an integral domain: in R×SR \times S, (1,0)⋅(0,1)=(0,0)(1, 0) \cdot (0, 1) = (0, 0).

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
