Definition
Let be a field and let be the projective plane over , with homogeneous coordinates . Let be a nonzero quadratic form on . The projective conic of is the set The form and its conic are non-degenerate if no invertible linear change of coordinates turns into a form in at most two variables.
Remarks
Example: . Its points are for and the point : if scale to and get ; if then . It is non-degenerate. If involved at most two variables in some coordinates, there would be a nonzero vector with for all . Here , and this vanishes for all only if and , so . If , this conic has points.
Non-example of non-degeneracy: gives the union of the two lines and . It involves only and , so it is degenerate.
Over , the non-degenerate form has an empty conic, so the form carries more information than the point set. Over an algebraically closed field, or over when the conic has a point, all non-degenerate conics are equivalent under projective transformations. The affine conic sections are the parts of projective conics off the line at infinity.
