Definition
Let be a vector space over a field , and let be the projective space of one-dimensional subspaces of . For a nonzero vector , write for the point spanned by . A projective subspace of is a set of the form where is a linear subspace of . Its projective dimension is .
Remarks
Equivalently, a set of points is a projective subspace when, for all and all scalars with , the point lies in . In words, contains the whole line through any two of its distinct points.
Example: in , the set is a projective subspace of dimension , a line. Check: it is for the plane of , which has dimension .
Non-example: the set is not a projective subspace. The line through its two points also contains , which is not in the set.
The empty set is , of dimension , and itself is a projective subspace. For finite-dimensional , a projective subspace of dimension is a hyperplane.
