Definition
Let and be domains, that is, nonempty connected open sets. A holomorphic map is proper if is compact for every compact set . The same condition defines proper holomorphic maps between complex manifolds.
Remarks
Equivalent form: is proper if and only if it has the following property. For every sequence in that eventually leaves every compact subset of , the sequence eventually leaves every compact subset of . For bounded domains this says that as .
Example: let be the unit disc and with . A compact lies in a closed disc with , and is a closed subset of , hence compact. The map of the unit polydisc in to itself is proper for the same reason.
Non-example: the inclusion is holomorphic but not proper. For the compact set , the preimage is not compact.
A proper holomorphic map between domains of the same dimension is surjective, its fibres are finite, and it is a finite branched covering. A biholomorphism is a proper holomorphic map. The proper holomorphic self-maps of are exactly the finite Blaschke products.
