Definition
Let be an event time with values in and let be a vector of covariates. The Cox proportional hazards model is the following statistical model. The conditional hazard function of given is where is an unknown parameter and the baseline hazard is an unknown function.
Remarks
For two covariate vectors and , the hazard ratio does not depend on ; this is the proportional hazards property. Equivalently, the survival functions satisfy , where is the baseline survival function.
Given right-censored data without tied times, is estimated by maximising the partial likelihood
Example: the Weibull model with shape and hazard is a proportional hazards model with .
Non-example: if a treatment has hazard and the control has , the ratio changes with time and the curves cross at . No constant satisfies , so these two groups do not follow a proportional hazards model.
