Pseudoconvexity
Definition
Let be an open set. Then is pseudoconvex if there is a continuous plurisubharmonic function with the following property. For every , the set has compact closure contained in .
A function with this last property is called an exhaustion function of .
Remarks
Example: the unit ball with . The function is plurisubharmonic, and is convex and increasing on , so is plurisubharmonic and continuous. The set is the ball of radius (empty for ), whose closure is compact and contained in .
Non-example: . Let be any continuous plurisubharmonic function on , and let be its maximum on the compact set . For , the disc , , lies in , so by subharmonicity . The points accumulate at the origin, which is not in , so does not have compact closure in , and no exhaustion of the required kind exists.
Equivalent forms: for , is pseudoconvex exactly when is plurisubharmonic on , where is the distance from to the boundary. If has boundary, pseudoconvexity is equivalent to Levi pseudoconvexity: the Levi form of a defining function is positive semidefinite on the complex tangent space at each boundary point.
