Pushout
Definition
Let be a category, and let and be morphisms of . A pushout of and is an object with morphisms and such that:
- .
- For every object and morphisms and with , there is a unique morphism with and .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a colimit of the diagram . A pushout is unique up to a unique isomorphism, and one writes or .
Example: in the category of sets, let be the smallest equivalence relation on with for all . Let , and let send an element to its class. Clause 1 holds by the choice of the relation. For clause 2, the map must send the class of to and the class of to ; this is well defined because .
Non-example: take with the two inclusions and no identification. If is not empty, then and lie in different parts, so clause 1 fails.
In the category of groups the pushout is the amalgamated free product .
