Definition
Let be a complex manifold of complex dimension , and let be an integer with . Let be a smooth function. It is strongly -convex at a point if its Levi form at , in local holomorphic coordinates, has at least positive eigenvalues. The manifold is -convex if there are a smooth function and a compact set such that:
- is an exhaustion: the set is relatively compact in for every .
- is strongly -convex at every point of .
The manifold is -complete if this holds with .
Remarks
This is the convention of Andreotti and Grauert; some authors shift the index by one. The number of positive eigenvalues of the Levi form does not depend on the choice of local coordinates. Example: is -complete with , whose Levi form has positive eigenvalues. Non-example: a compact complex manifold of positive dimension is -convex with , but it is not -complete. Indeed a strongly -convex function is strictly plurisubharmonic, so it has no maximum, while every continuous function on a compact manifold has one. The -complete manifolds are exactly the Stein manifolds, and the -convex manifolds are also called strongly pseudoconvex manifolds.
