Difference and functional equations Definition
q-difference equation
Builds on q-derivativeFunction
Definition
Let with and , let , and let be a set with . Let be a given function of complex variables. A -difference equation of order for an unknown function is a condition It is linear if it has the form with given functions on .
Remarks
Example: let and for , where and . Since the q-derivative satisfies , one gets . Written out, this is the first-order linear -difference equation .
Non-example: , satisfied by the gamma function, relates at and at the translate . It involves no dilate , so it is an ordinary difference equation and not a -difference equation.
The -derivative lets one rewrite any -difference equation in terms of , as a -analog of a differential equation. Many authors assume , or at least that is not a root of unity.
