q-gamma function

Builds on q-Pochhammer symbolGamma function

Definition

Let 0<q<10 < q < 1, and let (a;q)∞=∏k=0∞(1−aqk)(a; q)_\infty = \prod_{k=0}^\infty (1 - a q^k) be the infinite q-Pochhammer symbol. For a real number xx that is not in {0,−1,−2,…}\set{0, -1, -2, \ldots}, the qq-gamma function is Γq(x)=(1−q)1−x(q;q)∞(qx;q)∞.\Gamma_q(x) = (1 - q)^{1 - x} \frac{(q; q)_\infty}{(q^x; q)_\infty}.

Remarks

The products converge because ∑qk<∞\sum q^k < \infty, and (qx;q)∞≠0(q^x; q)_\infty \ne 0 because qx+k≠1q^{x+k} \ne 1 for all k≥0k \ge 0.

Example: Γq(1)=1\Gamma_q(1) = 1, since the two products are equal. Also Γq(2)=(1−q)−1(q;q)∞(q2;q)∞=1−q1−q=1\Gamma_q(2) = (1-q)^{-1} \frac{(q;q)_\infty}{(q^2;q)_\infty} = \frac{1 - q}{1 - q} = 1 and Γq(3)=(1−q)(1−q2)(1−q)2=1+q\Gamma_q(3) = \frac{(1-q)(1-q^2)}{(1-q)^2} = 1 + q. In general Γq(x+1)=[x]q Γq(x)\Gamma_q(x + 1) = [x]_q\, \Gamma_q(x) with [x]q=1−qx1−q[x]_q = \frac{1 - q^x}{1 - q}, so Γq(n+1)=[1]q[2]q⋯[n]q\Gamma_q(n + 1) = [1]_q [2]_q \cdots [n]_q.

Non-example of a valid argument: for x=−1x = -1 the factor 1−qx+11 - q^{x+1} of (qx;q)∞(q^x; q)_\infty is 00, so Γq\Gamma_q has a pole there.

For each fixed xx, Γq(x)→Γ(x)\Gamma_q(x) \to \Gamma(x) as q→1−q \to 1^-, where Γ\Gamma is the gamma function. A related definition exists for q>1q > 1.
