Quasifield
Builds on GroupDivision ring
Definition
Let be a set with two binary operations and , and let . The triple is a (left) quasifield if the following hold.
- is a group with identity element .
- for all .
- is a loop: there is with for all , and for the equations and have unique solutions in .
- for all .
- For all with , the equation has exactly one solution .
A right quasifield is defined in the same way with in clause 4 and in clause 5.
Remarks
Example: every division ring is a quasifield. Clauses 1 to 4 are axioms of a division ring. For clause 5, by distributivity is equivalent to , which has the unique solution since .
Non-example: the integers with the usual operations. Clause 3 fails, since has no solution in .
One can prove that the additive group of a quasifield is always abelian. A quasifield in which both distributive laws hold is a semifield, and a quasifield whose multiplication is associative is a near-field (on the matching side).
